Fierce Urgency

Economist, Aug. 1
The cover story argues that President Obama “must come down from his cloud and start leading.” Sagging poll numbers and stalled proposals show that Americans and Congress alike are growing weary of the president’s “vague statements” and heavy spending. Obama has given congressional Democrats too much control and failed to substantially negotiate with Republicans. He has handled foreign policy well Christian Audigier Clothing, but “if his schemes at home come to naught, then his credibility abroad will wither.” … An article examines the “chilling effect” of torture on American and British intelligence. Obama has attempted to move on, but “the past casts a long shadow.” Increased scrutiny in both countries has caused intelligence officials to worry about sharing information with one another for fear that their secrets will come out in legal probes. This new sensitivity reveals “the extent to which torture and other forms of harsh interrogation cloud the legitimate work of counter-terrorism.”

Time, Aug. 10
The cover story describes President Obama’s frustration with trying to clearly explain health care. “This has been the most difficult test for me so far in public life,” he confesses. He has gotten this far because he has delayed dealing with the controversial decisions of who should pay for reform and how much the government should be involved. In the next three months, he will need “fresh legislative moves” for the cornerstone of his agenda to succeed. … An article reports on phase two of the resistance in Iran: boycotts of products advertised on state television, orchestrated attempts to trip Tehran’s electrical grid, and impromptu protest chants that disperse before they can be stopped. Some companies have cut back advertising, stores have dropped unpopular brands, and a state company may lose $1 million a day in an upcoming text-message boycott.

New York Times Magazine, Aug. 2
The cover story wonders why Americans have stopped cooking. Julia Child, whose life is depicted in the upcoming film Julie and Julia, took the fear out of gourmet cooking, and the current explosion of cable cooking shows keeps interest in creative cuisine boiling. Why do we love to watch others cook but not to do it ourselves? Obesity rates are inversely proportional to time spent on food preparation, and anthropologists have begun to believe that cooking is a main behavior that distinguishes us from animals. … Virginia Heffernan dissects “Your Dad Asks Computer Questions,” a cartoon based on clueless Internet queries from real dads. What kinds of men “get” the Web? Some prefer more controlled communication; others stay away out of hammy deference to their “savvy” children. But when “older people” try out a computer and find something they like to do, they typically don’t need a bit of help.

Rolling Stone, Aug. 6
The cover story relives the final days of Michael Jackson, in which the pop star devoted all his energy to plotting his grand comeback. “We’ve got to put on the greatest show on Earth,” he told his manager and assured his friend Deepak Chopra that this time it was “for real.” With $270 million in debt and his creditors constantly on the verge of disclosure, Jackson needed the money that London’s O2 arena had offered. His road back to physical fitness was arduous, but by the last dress rehearsal before his death, the director says “he was ready to do that show.” … A profile of Rob Thomas focuses on his harsh Southern upbringing: a crazy alcoholic mother Marc Jacobs Dresses, relatives who hired serial killers, and the ever-presence of drugs. His detractors dismiss him as “the rock star next door,” but until his new album Cradlesong, he’d kept most of his personal life quiet.

The Nation, Aug. 17
The cover story sizes up the political and financial crisis that has made California a “failed state.” The meltdown has been brewing for decades and cannot be chalked up to partisan leaders. Endless overlapping veto power has created a vacuum of leadership in which no one can assert any real authority. But there’s general agreement on what to do: End gerrymandering and term limits, consider open primaries, and overhaul the state’s cap on property tax. … Recalling his own arrest in a similarly tense situation, Eric Alterman criticizes Henry Louis Gates Jr. for “racializing” the context of his now-infamous arrest two weeks ago. Gates, President Obama, and the media immediately assumed the officer had racial motivations, even though he had led classes on avoiding racial profiling. The misguided discussion of the incident has ensured that “this is not the ‘teachable moment’ for which liberals and civil rights groups are so understandably eager.”

Evidence of toxic chemicals on road union

Toxic pesticides and cancerous chemicals were buried on a stretch of the Pacific Highway where road workers recently became ill, a union claims.

Construction Forestry and Mining Union (CFMEU) state secretary Brian Parker said on Friday he had evidence in the form of government and police reports to back the allegations.

“We want further detailed analysis of these chemicals so we know what we are dealing with there Windows 7 Serial,” he said in a statement.

Road workers experienced nausea and vomiting after digging up an unknown clay-like substance during upgrades near Port Macquarie just before Easter.

The workers were taken to a doctor and have since recovered.

Chemical waste was reportedly buried at the site more than 30 years ago after an accident involving a truck carrying radioactive isotopes from Sydney to Brisbane.

In mid-April Server 2003 Key, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) said independent testing on samples had ruled out a range of contaminants.

But in a statement on Friday, the CFMEU said the deadly pesticide DDT – banned in 1987 – had been buried at the site along with chromium, the chemical linked to lung cancer in a United States case made famous by Erin Brokovich.

Mr Parker said he had received a copy of a 1980 police report and a 1987 State Pollution Control Commission letter which both confirmed the toxic waste had been buried in two holes three metres deep after a fatal accident near Herons Creek.

“The (police) report says that two of the police on duty after the fatal accident and chemical spill complained of nausea McAfee Product Key, dizziness and headaches,” Mr Parker said.

“These are exactly the same symptoms that our members are experiencing 20 years later.”

The CFMEU is holding a press conference with Dr Peter Mayne, who has been treating the road workers, at the Laurieton Medical Centre on Friday.

Beirut – Hamas Says It’s Holding Talks With 5 EU C

Beirut – A senior Hamas official says the Islamic militant group has been holding secret political talks with five European Union member states in recent months.

The EU says officially that it will not deal with Hamas unless the group renounces violence and recognizes Israel.

Europe and the U.S. have been rethinking Mideast policy since the Arab Spring uprisings toppled several pro-Western regimes in favor of Islamists.

Osama Hamdan replica watches, who handles foreign relations for Hamas replica watches, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that talks with European government officials focus on the Hamas positions toward Israel and paralyzed Mideast peace efforts.

Hamdan would not name the countries. Three Hamas officials in Hamas-ruled Gaza said Britain replica watches, France and Holland are among them.

There was no immediate comment from EU countries.

Govt says let Thomson investigation run

Trade Minister Craig Emerson says investigations against embattled Labor MP Craig Thomson should be allowed to run their course and the opposition should not set itself up as judge and jury.

Dr Emerson said Mr Thomson was under investigation but had not been charged.

“Let those investigations take their course and let's not have politicians appointing themselves as judge and jury,” he told Sky News.

“Let the independent agencies, whether it be the police or anyone else who has a legitimate interest in these as independent agencies, do their work without the parliament being heavied by Mr Abbott saying there now needs to be a vote to exclude Mr Thomson from the parliament.”

In his first public explanation of allegations of misuse of unions funds while an official of the Health Services Union Tattoo Gun Needles, Mr Thomson, now a Labor MP, denied any wrongdoing Handmade Tattoo Machines, accusing a rival official of setting him up in an elaborate plot to ruin his burgeoning political career.

The opposition has demanded the government reject Mr Thomson's vote on the floor of parliament.

Dr Emerson accused the coalition of applying a double standard.

He said three MPs in the former government faced investigation for theft from the commonwealth through misuse of printing entitlements.

“At no stage did Labor say they are not entitled to vote,” he said.

“Mr Abbott as leader of the house and Mr Howard as prime minister said … they were entitled to the presumption of innocence and the investigative processes should be able to go to conclusion. It's the same principle.”

Dr Emerson said he sincerely hoped the parliament didn't go down the path where politicians could vote other politicians out of parliament and deny the people of their electorate representation because of some allegation.

“That would be terribly destructive for our democracy,” he said.

Liberal MP Mathias Cormann said he hoped Prime Minister Julia Gillard was watching Laurie Oakes' Nine Network interview with Mr Thomson on Saturday.

“It goes straight to her credibility and her judgment. How much longer will she stand by Craig Thomson and accept his vote on the floor of the parliament?” he told Sky News.

“His story was completely unbelievable and bizarre.”

Senator Cormann said Mr Thomson wanted people to believe that some phantom stalker in the union movement went into his home, stole his credit cards, driver's licence and mobile phone, used them for prostitutes, then returned them all to his home.

Then Mr Thomson had signed off on the credit card payments.

Federal Attorney-General Nicola Roxon says she's withholding judgment on Mr Thomson and has urged others to do the same before allegations against him are settled in court.

Ms Roxon dodged questions on whether she believed Mr Thomson's claims that the HSU scandal was the result of a set-up and a plot to ruin his political career.

“It's not a matter of what I believe or what anyone else in the public believes. It will be something that no doubt will be tested in court,” Ms Roxon told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday.

She said Mr Thomson had the right to defend himself and was entitled to the presumption of innocence, but said that should not be mistaken to suggest she condoned the alleged misuse of union funds.

“Every union member and Labor member across the country would be horrified if these allegations are true, because every hard-earned dollar that is contributed to unions, contributed to the Labor Party, should be used for appropriate purposes.”

She said she had not provided any advice to Mr Thomson on the matter.

Meanwhile, with rallies taking place around the country on Saturday, Ms Roxon reiterated her support for same-sex marriage.

She said she was not frustrated that the Labor party as a whole had not backed her view, and welcomed the party's upcoming conscience vote.

“I think (same sex marriage) is an issue that's time is coming, and I think that many people, me included, have over time been persuaded of the importance of this Homemade Tattoo Machine,” she said.

Clinton heads to Bangladesh after China dissident

BEIJING, May 5, 2012 (Reuters) — Leaving behind diplomatic drama over a Chinese dissident, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faced a fresh test on Saturday as she moves on to Bangladesh where the disappearance of an opposition leader has fueled growing tensions. Clinton will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her opposition rival, Begum Khaleda Zia Micky Sharpz Tattoo Machines, following her arrival late on Saturday Tattoo Guns For Sale, and will also pay a call on Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, whose removal from the pioneering micro-lender Grameen Bank has been criticized by Washington.

A senior State Department official said Clinton’s visit would highlight growing cooperation between Washington and Dhaka on everything from counter-terrorism and U.N. peacekeeping to global health and food security.

“Her visit is an opportunity to show Bangladesh’s government and 160 million citizens that America is truly Bangladesh’s partner,” the official said.

But the trip will also likely put fresh focus on the Obama administration’s commitment to human rights after the standoff in Beijing over activist Chen Guangcheng, whose flight to the U.S. embassy after escaping house arrest overshadowed Clinton’s three days of meetings in Beijing.

China on Friday announced that Chen would be allowed to apply to study in the United States – a move praised by Clinton – but critics have accused U.S. diplomats of mishandling the situation and failing to do enough to shield him from Chinese government persecution.

Clinton will be the first senior official to visit Bangladesh since 2004, and U.S. officials depict the trip as part of a broad “pivot” to greater engagement across the Asia-Pacific region.

She will conclude the trip with visits to the Indian cities of Kolkata and New Delhi early next week.

RIGHTS RECORD UNDER SCRUTINY

Clinton arrives in Bangladesh amid mounting turmoil as Khaleda’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Hasina’s ruling Awami League party have accused each other of abducting former BNP lawmaker Ilyas Ali.

Five people were killed in clashes between police and protesters during a rash of recent strikes, the worst violence in the past three years of Hasina’s rule in one of the poorest countries in Asia.

Pressure group Human Rights Watch said Ali’s case was part of an alarming rise in the abduction of political activists and opposition members, and it called on Hasina’s government to mount a credible investigation.

“The government has taken no serious steps to ensure such an investigation of these disappearances takes place nor to prevent them in the first place,” the group’s Asia director, Brad Adams, said in a statement.

Clinton is expected to bring up the harassment and disappearance of political leaders and other human rights violations, and may press for a return to a system where elections were held under a non-party caretaker administration.

Political tension has already led the BNP to stage two countrywide general strikes although it has also promised not to disrupt Clinton’s visit.

Analysts fear that more unrest could threaten Bangladesh’s ambition to become a middle-income country by 2021, a drive which could benefit from more U.S. help for its economy, additional investment and quota-free access for goods to U.S. markets.

In January, the United States said it would provide close to $1 billion in aid for Bangladesh over the next five years.

Washington wants Dhaka to sign a Trade and Investment Cooperation Forum Agreement and a strategic partnership.

Despite the political storm clouds, Clinton’s visit marks continued strong U.S. engagement with Bangladesh Damascus Steel Tattoo Machines, which her husband, former President Bill Clinton, visited in a landmark trip in 2000.

The Clintons have long been friendly with Yunus, an economics professor who set up Grameen Bank decades ago and gained world fame as a banker to the poor, and the United States has criticized his forced dismissal in 2011 because he was beyond the legally mandated retirement age.

Yunus’ supporters described the move as a political vendetta by the government against what it saw as a potential future challenger to Hasina.

Clinton will also meet Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC, another Bangladesh-based non-governmental group whose pioneering anti-poverty programs have expanded as far as Afghanistan, Tanzania and Haiti, the U.S. official said.

“Her meetings with the two development innovators will reaffirm our commitment to the institutions they built, as well as to broader civil society in Bangladesh,” the official said.

Union official sues Tony Abbott

A union official is suing Opposition Leader Tony Abbott for calling him a thug and accusing him of intimidation and extortion during a nationally televised address.

John Setka Buy Hale Bob Dresses, the assistant secretary of the Victorian branch of the CFMEU, says Mr Abbott defamed him and caused grave injury, humiliation, embarrassment and caused him loss and damage.

In a statement of claim lodged in the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday, Mr Setka said Mr Abbott made the defamatory remarks during a conference of the Master Builders Association of Victoria in February this year.

The writ also names Australian News Channel, the producer of Sky News which replayed Mr Abbott’s words, as a second defendant.

Mr Setka’s lawyers claim in the writ that in a public answer to a question during the conference, Mr Abbott referred to “home visits from some of the gentlemen associated with some of the industrial organisations that you deal with every day”.

“We know they take place because people like Mr Setko (sic) have told us they take place.”

Mr Setka claims Mr Abbott’s words amount to an allegation that he engages in unlawful behaviour by visiting the homes of people working in the construction industry for the purpose of intimidating them.

He further claims Mr Abbott said he visited homes of construction industry workers “for the purpose of making demands that amount to extortion” and that he is a “self-confessed thug”.

The writ claims that the publication and republication of Mr Abbott’s words “gravely injured” Mr Setka.

The actions of both Mr Abbott and Australian News Channel entitle him to aggravated damages Herve Leger sale, it is claimed.

“The defendants published the first defendant’s words without an honest belief in the truth of the imputations complained of … ,” the writ claims.

It is also claimed Mr Abbott declined to make a retraction or apology when requested and uploaded the transcript of his words on his website.

It is similarly claimed that Australian News Channel refused to retract the words objected to, asserting Mr Abbott’s comments were “true and completely defensible”.

Mr Abbott said the matter will be strongly defended and restated his belief that there has been a great deal of intimidation in the construction industry.

“I make no apologies for being blunt about that,” he said.

“One of my proudest moments as a minister was the establishment of the Cole royal commission, which helped to expose a cowboy culture in much of the commercial construction sector.

“One of the first acts of an incoming coalition government would be to restore the Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC).

“Almost nothing is more important than upholding the rule of law and that is what a coalition government is determined to do.”

Custom 1956 Bentley S1 ute up for charity auction

Filed under: Fake Watches — Tags: — admin @ 2:54 pm

Bentley and Bugatti may be under common ownership these days, but back in the day, they were bitter rivals. That rivalry lead one Ettore Bugatti to deride his English competition as “the world’s fastest lorries” (the British term for commercial trucks). He was speaking figuratively, because while the notion of a Bentley sport-ute has been rumored every now and then Tattoo Supplies, the company doesn’t actually make trucks. This, then, stands as an exception.

This classic started life in 1956 as a Bentley S1, purchased by the owner of a large retail chain before changing hands to the Earl of Stradbroke who had it converted to a pickup. The work was carried out in New South Wales Tattoo Supplies, Australia, where they’ve always been bonkers for utes. They painted it yellow and gave it a woody-style pickup bed.

The car was donated by Stradbroke to the Trinity Grammar School, which is now auctioning the vehicle through insurance broker Shannons to raise funds to build a new library. The vehicle will hit the auction block during the Australian Motor Show on July 10, where it’s expected to fetch between $22,000 and $32,000 in Australian funds, or about $23,600-$34,400 in equivalent American greenbacks.

REPORTSubaru says it can’t Justy-fy selling a subc

What do Toyota Discount Christian Audigier Clothes, Nissan and Honda all have in common? (Besides the fact that they are all Japanese automakers, that is?) They all re-entered the subcompact market in 2006 after abandoning it years ago. What’s more, Mazda is planning to bring its subcompact Mazda2 to U.S. shores next year Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, Suzuki has signaled its intent to enter the B-segment with its popular Swift hatchback, and the domestics are in the game with the Chevrolet Aveo and forthcoming Ford Fiesta.

So Cheap Christian Audigier Clothing, where does that leave Subaru? After all, the company has roots in small cars Replica Herve Leger v neck, starting with its first automobile, the downright minuscule 360 Cheap Chanel Dresses, all the way up to the off-the-wall Discount Herve Leger gown, four-wheel drive, three-cylinder Justy and its unconventional CVT.

Subaru spokesman Michael McHale tells Wards Auto, “The thing with the B-sector is you have to ask how you make money at the lower levels. You look at the pricing on the B segment – it’s a tough segment to make money.” Indeed it is – with base models of some competitors starting just under $10,000, profits are in very short supply.

For an automaker as small as Subaru, taking a risk on what is likely to be an unprofitable model generally isn’t a smart idea. In other words, don’t hold your breath for another subcompact Subaru any time soon.

Detroit 2009Little Bigtime – Concept C takes Linco

Play the word association game with an average American Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, and when the topic is “Lincoln Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses,” you’re likely to hear words like “traditional Buy Christian Audigier Clothes,” “big,” and “limousine.” Terms describing compact hatchbacks like the Concept C shown above simply won’t be on the tips of anyone’s tongues. So what gives? Has Dearborn finally looped it? Take a closer look Discount Emilio Pucci Dresses, and what at first seems like a designer pet project reveals a good deal more forethought and finesse.

Yes, the Concept C is small. Said to be underpinned by the next-generation Ford Focus platform, this is a C-segment car, much shorter than any current Lincoln, and indeed, much shorter than any Lincoln we can recall. But how about that width? Emphasized by its sizable fenders and the strong shoulder-line in the doors (said to be inspired by the saddle tanks on go karts), the Concept C may be as long as a Focus, but it’s roughly as wide as a MKZ sedan. The extra width and the upright greenhouse (there’s almost no tumblehome at all) mean that the C can accommodate two rows of three full-sized adults in surprising comfort. The bustle back shape reminds of a number of Gallic automobiles Karen Millen Dresses sale, including the previous Renault Megane Emilio Pucci Dresses sale, but rather amazingly, the formal roofline, twin wing grilles and full-width rear light bar that are Lincoln hallmarks don’t look out of place. Is My Super Bowl Party Illegal

A Baptist congregation in Indiana plans to cancel its Super Bowl party this weekend, after receiving a threatening letter from the National Football League. NFL officials say the church would have broken the law by charging an admission fee and by screening the game on a TV that exceeds 55 inches. On Thursday, Slate’s Josh Levin promised to host a Super Bowl party with his new, gigantic television. Will he get in trouble, too?

No. The 55-inch limit cited by the NFL applies only to public showings of the Super Bowl Replica Porsche Design Watches, not private gatherings. According to U.S. copyright law Buy Cheap Replica Tag Heuer Watches, Josh is in the clear so long as he doesn’t take his gigantic TV to a public place, or invite “a substantial number of persons” to his house—more than a normal circle of family and social acquaintances. If he sticks to those rules, his Super Bowl party will be a private display and won’t infringe on the rights of the NFL Replica Titoni Watches, no matter how big his television. (Since he’s hosting a private event, he could even get away with charging his guests admission.)

Public displays are more tightly controlled; as a general rule, they require the consent of the league. But there is an exception, from section 110 of the copyright law: You can show the game to a big crowd, provided you’re not charging people to watch it and that when you tune in Replica Omega Watches, you’re only using “a single receiving apparatus of a kind commonly used in private homes.” (This is called the “homestyle” exemption.)

Here’s where things get fuzzy. Would a 134-inch projection TV be “homestyle,” as in, “of a kind commonly used in private homes?” How about a 70-inch plasma screen? Given the rapid changes in video technology and consumer spending habits, it’s very difficult for the courts to make these determinations. That means the NFL lawyers have to decide for themselves when a screen is too big and it’s time to send a threatening letter.

In 1998, Congress amended the copyright law to give a little bit more guidance when it comes to a class of events known as “nondramatic musical works.” (This designation might include the Super Bowl’s theme music and halftime show.) The new rule gave bars and restaurants the right to broadcast these works on any television that’s smaller than 55 inches and hooked up to fewer than five loudspeakers. They were also allowed to use more than one television at a time, as long as each one was in a different room.

At the time, the 55-inch limit was seen as a major concession to electronics retailers and restaurants; a TV that big would never have been considered “homestyle,” but the new rule made it legal for a bar to use one. In fact Fake Breitling Watches, the 55-inch rule put the United States in violation of an international treaty on intellectual property. (We’re still paying off fines to the World Trade Organization as a result.) These days, more people have large screens in their homes Fake Bvlgari Watches for sale, and the rule seems like less of a departure from the homestyle exemption. It also gives the NFL lawyers a handy rule of thumb: Instead of worrying over whether a certain television is “commonly used,” they can just apply the 55-inch, four-loudspeaker rule across the board.
